Independent Research on Ownership, Governance & Economic Outcomes
The Institute for Governance & Markets (IGM) is an independent research initiative focused on how ownership structures, governance frameworks, and market dynamics impact civic and economic outcomes. Founded by a group of European researchers, IGM examines how governance and issues of stakeholder influence across various sectors influence economic growth.
We are currently conducting research on Member-Owned Institutions & Economic Outcomes — exploring how governance structures impact financial and social outcomes for cooperative and mutual organization members.

Member-owned institutions play a critical role in many sectors, from energy, retail, real estate, healthcare, agriculture and other sectors. These organizations are built on the principle of stakeholder ownership and democratic governance.
Through this project, we aim to explore:
How does this form of governance affect the stewardship of publicly traded portfolio companies?
Do companies controlled by member-owned orgaizations delivering financial value and long-term benefits to key stakeholders?
How do these institutions compare to other ownership structures?
